I thought about it but it was the coil that came on the boat when I bought it so I don't know how old it is or how much life it has left. I replaced the condenser, points, rotor, and cap So just for a peice of mind I wanted to add a new one so I can track its age and know its condition. I now have the other coil as a backup on the boat. Normally I would not have, but for 2 dollars it was a cheap price of mind.

Generally, coils don't 'wear out' I think in my 30+ years of mechanicing I have replaced 0 coils from being worn out. I have replaced a few (not very many) that have had other damage, like corrosion has eaten a hole in the bottom and all the oil has leaked out, or some idiot has over-tightened the clamp and crushed the housing, or cooked by someone leaving the key on when the points just happen to be closed... By all means throw a spare in the tool box, but I think it'll corroded away before it's used....

Your money and time would have been much better spent just calling up pertronix and ordering the proper conversion kit and coil for your boat. You would have a new coil, never have to fool around with points again, better spark, better HP, better fuel burn and MPG....and never have to chase your tail again.

I will convert to electronic ignition sometime soon, but my season here in Utah is over in about 1 month so not this year. My money could not have been spent better as the new coil was only 2 dollars. I have the new coil hooked up and it is working just fine with the resistance wire by-passed. Thanks for all the help everyone!
