Coils?

How would I know if the coils have went out on my 1978 Chrysler 140hp? I was crusing across the lake today, and just as we were bopping along across some wake, we lost all power to operate. we limped off plane back to the landing. There, being my wife hasn't learned to drive the boat yet, I parked it to get my trailer. upon trying to restart it, i had to rev it up, cut it back to shift into gear, and hammer the throttle just to get it to go, barely.

Re: Coils?

It sounds more like a fuel related problem than an ignition problem.

I just had that same kind of thing happen to me, and it turned out I was fouling out plugs! Maybe have a look at them and see which one is not firing? By the way this is not coming from any kind of professional... I always try to remember to Keep it Simple!

Re: Coils?

I checked the plugs last night, and it looked like 3 out of 4 of the cylinders were fouled. What does that mean...what causes that???

Re: Coils?

What did the fourth plug look like? Fouled plugs are usually either a rich condition or weak spark. All four of your plugs should have looked the same if it is fuel related or does the 140 have separate carbs for each cylinder? If the one plug is clean I would suspect a blown head gasket or a bad coil. You should do a compression test on all the cylinders and do a spark test on the bad cylinder to verify it is getting a spark
