Coils

I have a 1977 70hp how do I test the coils can I use a multi meter. It starts but will not go to high rpms. Drop it to idel it dies.

Do a compression test first.---Post the numbers.-----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" ( 1 cm ) or more on the 3 leads ?----How did the motor run for you last season ?----What happened ?

The compression is good 120 118 120 it has been running good this season did work on it the water pump the carbs among other things. It started but would not go in high idel with the to start lever and when put in gear it died. Changed the plugs and the same thing happened.

Check spark/carb synchronization (link & sync). Especially, make sure the timing is advancing before the carb butterflys open.

Some will argue.----I think compression should be around 140 PSI on that motor.
