cold start nuisance

Hi all,
I have a 98 Johnson 150 Ficht, runs like a top except for cold starting. Takes about 10 crankings to fire. Warm or hot start no problem. I do all the maintenance myself and it is up to date. Fuel bulb is firm, spark plugs about 60 hours, batteries and terminals good and clean. A friend of mine recently repowered with a 2002 Johnson 150 but I don't think it is a Ficht. I did notice when cold the starter cranked a lot longer than mine then fired. I'm assuming the starter disengages after a preset time to save the battery.
Thanks in advance,
cheers
David

You may want to check the plugs on your motor and your friend is not using the correct starting procedure if it is a carbed motor.

Wow! One emphatic reply! Then it cannot be anything else :) boobie, if the plugs are indexed correctly, gap correct, visually clean, regular use of Carbonguard what should I check? At $25 apiece they don't get replaced until the 100 hours is up, anyway for the rest of the weekend it isn't a problem.

Sorry for the bad answer as the customer is always right and most of the time he won't listen. Don't worry, no more replies from me!!!!!!!

That is a fuel injected engine.

Some questions to ask yourself:

1. Do I have an external fuel filter?
2. If so, when was it changed last?

Hey Boobie, sounds like I have the same customers as you! Wasn't a smart reply, I was being serious. External fuel filter about 25 hours old.

Re: cold start nuisance

The only reason I came back with the spark plug reply was those motors were known for eating them. Been there. I've seen them where they were hard starting and wouldn't idle but would run okay at top RPM. Replaced the plugs and all was good.
