Cold starting

I have a 1986 50hp johnson. It seems to start very hard cold. I takes about 1 to 2 minuets of cranking to get the motor started and when it finally starts i need to keep pressing the choke to keep it running. Also with the cold start lever all the way up the rpms fluctuate. Its starts slow and then rev up super high.

Carbs need a cleaning by the sounds of it, ever service the carbs on it?

Yeah, they were just rebuilt, but im not totally sure that the mechanic did a good job. Cause he said it was all fixed and it was no different from before he worked on it.

Re: Cold starting

Also the plugs foul after a couple time starting. The motor is on a small bass boat so after moving a couple times it starts to start hard.

Re: Cold starting

Sounds fishy, either carb or it isn't getting fuel, could be a weak fuel pump. Try getting someone to pump the bulb when you are doing your startup procedure. I'd love to know the mechs version of "rebuilt".

Re: Cold starting

Make sure the carbs are clean and the gas is good (meaning not old) then check out this thread, esp the part about holding the choke in for an 8 count. I had terrible problems starting mine cold and then I tried the tricks I learned on here and can get it going right off the bat, only having to crank once.

Give it a try.

Try the procedure in that link I posted first. I'm telling you I had the same issue as you and it turned out to be procedural (although I cleaned the carbs as well which is a good precaution anyway.)

Re: Cold starting

does that carburetor have a butterfly choke? it shouldn't. you can't choke it.

however, the electric primer may be at fault. you may have fuel lines disconnected or the plastic nipples broke off, worst case you need to get a new primer pump
