You can get the float in a new OEM carb kit BRP 439075 or individually from your dealer BRP 375792.

Outdoorsman,
Here's a helpful chart that a neat person named Garry gave me that you might find useful. Also, in case you need some parts, try the guy at Laingsoutboards---he's very knowledgeable and helful.
Good luck,
JBJ

Samo Ott........ can you elaborate on this compression relief system? You've got me curious now. Exactly....... what is the absolute BEST way to check compression on a system with compression relief installed? Thanks again.............. ALAN

Simply unscrew the bar that goes from the pull start to the relief rod and then test as usual. There's just slot screws at the end.

Re: Collecting older outboard suggestions?

Can anyone help with obtaining the part numbers for the head and bypass covers? I'd really like to crack her open later, to have a look-see, should the compression not come up after a good decarb. Thanks in advance again !!!............. ALAN

Re: Collecting older outboard suggestions?

Well, the Javelin is now in two five gallon buckets. The parts are awaiting a good cleaning and a new coat of paint. I have decided to take the powerhead down later and hone the cylinders and re-ring this jewel. In the meantime............. I've also run across another gem!!!! A 1958 Johnson FD-12. One owner, never painted, and in really good condition. And I can pick it up for less than $200 dollars. Would you guy's jump on this at that price? I can likely pick it up for about $150.

I have 2 FD-11's and like em. One of mine is electric start. Is yours? As usual, check compression, that's the biggie, the rest can be fixed easily... if it's all original, you'll have to redo the ignition and carb...

Roger on the compression. I haven't commited to it as of yet. I'm almost certain its not electric start, though I may be wrong. Either way, $150 doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. The carbs and impeller are a piece of cake. The only thing that concerns me is the condition of the coils. If I had to guess, I'd say they haven't been replaced. But I'm not certain. That will set me back a little more $.

That's a reasonable price. I'd try for $150, but $200 isn't out of line. Of course, everything depends on price and I'm assuming its a nice original, which may need the usual attention. Full tune-up and gearcase reseal is in the neighbourhood of $200. So check it out closely since $200 + $200 = more than its worth. We really must be crazy to pursue this hobby!

More like obsessed....... :) ........... I just enjoy the simplicity of the early years I guess. Its almost like time travel isn't it? I can go outside and step back 50 years! Back to a time when everything was built simple, rugged, and made to outlast it's owner. I'm simply fascinated with them.

Outdoorsman,
the truly depraved don't have to go outside and look at their old motors to step back a few years.:D
I like 'em, too. The '58 18 johnson is a nice choice!
Later,
JBJ
