Some of the private mechanics courses in the U.S. are very, very expensive, and they're not able to promise job placement. Some of these colleges teach both marine and motorcycle repairs. Virtually every student in the U.S. is going to school on government guaranteed loans--and will be strapped with payments for many years.

My son in law took diesel truck mechanics at a highly rated private college, and it's now $23K for a one year program. The most he's made in that profession is about $15 per hour. Unless he moves to a larger city, his prospects at making a good living are minimal. Had he taken auto mechanics instead of heavy trucks, he would be much higher paid and able to get a job easier.

It appears that your school is at one of the Canadian community colleges at regular tuition rates. This appears to be a 1 year program and possibly some apprenticeship time. Go for it. You can never have too many trades.

thanks Eddiepetty! yeah I tried the working on motorcycles route and have discovered the pay isnt all that great, even though i enjoy it very much so its not for me! but i diffidently enjoy marine much more so i believe this is the path i should go down.

$23K is nuts. That's either one poorly run facility with a lot of waste, or else someone's getting very wealthy on the backs of youth.
I teach in a heavy equipment college program. The trick is industry partnerships. Our tuition is about $7K for a 1 year program but a student can apply for bursaries and get that reduced.
A paid internship in the middle of our program can help students come out with very little debt if any.

As I advise any prospective student: start with your dream employer. Go where you'd love to work one day and spend a career. Ask them where they hire from - what school they support and would look to for new hires.

Being a great school that gives a great education and has great faculty isn't worth a hill of beans if the employers are funding a competitive program.
If a network of Mercury dealers are dumping tens of thousands in support for school "B", and a tech wants to work there.... School "A" is not a good place to go, even if the teachers are really great.

The cost to go to school for some programs these days is outrageous and the pay isn't all great (i find this to mostly true in the states). but up here in canada some mechanics jobs can be very well paying depending on where you live. The program I am taking is only a year plus apprenticeship so not to bad and about $4000 by the time you pay for all your books and stuff.

Well 55, count me as officially jealous. I mean I'm old and retired and not going anywhere, but still... Looks like a lot of fun and sounds like the cost is not too bad. good luck, bud.

You forgot to include tools! My younger son is an auto mechanic and has probably $20K in tools now.

yeah tools are definitely expensive and depending on how good of quality you buy it can get upwards of 50k, luckily I have pretty much everything i will need with exceptions to marine specialty tools and a few miscellaneous ones.

My advice on tools is to buy good ones but only the ones you will actually use. Why have big money in tools gathering dust .?

Hi 55,
Great choice! I've been teaching at that campus for the last 5 years, though not in the marine program. It's a good place to learn and has excellent professors. Maybe we'll rub shoulders sometime. - Grandad
