Re: Colmen motors?

They are marked Made in China right on the motor.
They are also priced right up there with Tohatsu and Nissan motors and not that far behind Mercury. I don't see much advantage in taking a chance with an unknown motor when for a few bucks you can have something you know you can get parts for.
I heard somewhere that they may be made by Parson outboards in China, which I believe means they're supposedly a Yamaha knockoff, but from what I saw of the two on display in ****'s Sporting goods here they don't share much in the way of design or resemblance to any of the current Yamaha motors. They wanted $2150 for a 15hp short shaft here, I can buy a Tohatsu which is a proven motor with parts support for $2300. I just don't see the sense in buying Chinese for that little bit of money saved.
If they were half the price, maybe, but not to save a few hundred bucks on something that could fail and leave you stranded out on the water.

Re: Coleman motors?

Chinese motors, either Parsons or Sail brand rebadged for big box store sale.
A neighbor bought the 15hp when it first showed up in the stores here.
He had issues from day one, the so called certified service center won't touch it because they didn't sell it.
He was all but told to either return it, stop payment on his credit card, or fix it himself. He finally got the store to replace it, the second one ran but the thing locked up after sitting for a few months over the winter. I think he's about ready to through it through the store window.

It don't look like all that bad of a motor but I don't see any resemblence to any other brand sold here. I see features that were copied from Honda, others from maybe Yamaha, and a few from Tohatsu but its not any one of those as a whole.
Going on pictures only, the closest I've seen is Parsun from China but even there I see little design differences just looking at pics on the web.
Either way they are Chinese, and unless Coleman intends to step up the support on these somehow, they're not going to be a valid option at the current price. Their cheaper than most but not cheap enough in my book to take the chance.
