Combining Motors

i have two outboards..one is a Johnson the other a Evinrude.. both 25 hp..<br /><br />the evinrude has been dunked and was never used agian for two years.. its MANUAL start.. and prop is spun out (spline drive)<br />the johnson is running ok but not perfect.. its electric start.. and runs bad with cowling on the motor..<br /><br />i would like to run the 'rude..can i combine the two and make one or would it be better to make the johnny better (i know easier since it is running)??

There is nothing wrong with making one out of two, especially if it can save you a lot of money. I would tear both power heads all the way down. Especially the one that has been dunked. If the johnson runs poor with the hood on, it is probably sucking in exhaust gases somewhere. Taking both engines completely down, and using the best parts from both would make a good winter project. I have done this many times.

Before you start, Poolshark, find out the year models of both engines. The closer they are the more likely that parts are interchangable. Then get a Repair Manual that covers both.<br /><br />Your Johnny is probably trying to breathe exhaust gas, as RJohnson says. There is also a small possibility that you have a heat related ignition failure that stays cool enough to work correctly with the cover off. Either should be fairly simple to repair and turn it into a good runner.<br /><br />If you simply want a winter project, I would tear down the 'Rude and see if it can be repaired and what it would take to get it running well. Do that before tearing into the Johnny (except to find out why it runs poorly with the cover on).<br /><br />There is nothing wrong with pooling parts of two identical dead engines to make one good one, but that may not be what you have.<br /><br />Tell us the model numbers of both engines so we can see if they are really compatible.<br /><br />Good luck.
