coming out of gear

Merc, inline 4. older but not sure exact year. At about 3/4 throttle it comes out of gear and the engine races, i have to bring it back to neutral for it to be able to go back into gear. we did replace the shift cable recently. Any idea why this would happen?

Cables not adjusted properly, and the dog clutches are probably rounded over and even with perfect adjustment will still pop out of gear.
New gear and shift dog will cure the problem.
