Hi all, I’ve recently acquired a 1987 sea ray Seville she runs good but the shifter has issues, 1st outing we lost neutral and “throttle only”, took shifter apart saw that where shifter cable connects to a post and that post also goes into another piece of linkage well the post came out of that linkage so put it back in, seemed to fix it, next outing lost forward gear took shifter apart and cable had completely come off the post, fixed it again but I’m not trusting it and the set screw for shifter lever doesn’t seem to hold shifter without loosening back up even with thread lock (hole is not stripped) also the neutral safety buttons on top of shifter does nothing.
Still “throttle only” button is not functioning.
Also the “trim up” button does not work, have to use “trailer” button to trim up Uhg,
Can I replace this with a new shifter?
Like the commander 2000? Or the 3000?
Something else?
Thank you in advance.IMG_0855.jpeg

Sure can use any which indicate Mercruiser/Mercury control
Yours being a 1987 there may need to replace the cables to use 3000 or 4000.

Trim up not working and having to use trailer to trim up is probably the trim limit switch on outdrive not working. You can jumper it out at the transom and see if trim works.

I just put in a Uflex B183 controller. Nice piece of equipment. Italian. Plug and play with my cables. Mid-70's Merc 120.

just take note that with the trim limit jumpered you can over trim the drive when at speed. You are not supposed to go into trailer range unless you are no more than a fast idle speed. Usually the ujoints will start letting you know ....

10-4, yes right now the trim gauge is pegged out at full tilt, it was like that when I got the boat.

Can you explain what “jumper it out at transom” means? And ‘how to’ please.
Thanks

trim gauge is separate from the trim limit. port side is the limit switch which is wired to the trim pump harness. The trim gauge has a sender on the starboard side that sends an ohm signal up through the engine harness to the dash. these two are best replaced while doing a bellows job.

on attached wiring drawing you can see the trim limit switch - item H. where this connects at the bullet connectors inside the transom you can put a jumper wire in to electrically bypass the limit switch. if the limit switch is the issue the trim up will now work as will the trailer switch that always worked. The trim up will now allow it to go all the way up as it thinks the trim limit has not been made yet...
