Commander shift box

I have a commander shift box on my 1976 50hp, 4cyl.

When you push the throttle only button, the controle handle will not go forward so you can give it more gas in neutral.

It works fine when you hold in the lock bar to go into forward or reverse, but I would like to be able to throttle it in neutral.

Any thoughts?

The shift/control arm lock release must be squeeze in order to move the control arm out of the 'neutral' position, anytime. Period

Simply push the neutral button with the other hand while you squeeze the control lock release and move the control arm.

Thank you, I had thought this may be the case, but my "teacher" insisted that it was not, and said that if I did push the throttle only button well squeezing the release it would go into gear. My teacher is a yahama user, they must be different.


As far as I have been able to determine there are no real safety courses in my area, other than the online one and it is basicly a test of the boat and water safety guide ND game and Fish puts out.


I have the boat out one time since I finished it and plan on taking it out this Monday, and wanted this issue resolved before I took it out agian. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=218429

I have a Commander 2000 with the big black button. When I first bought the boat it didn't work. I lubed it best I could without completely dismantling the controller and it helped but didn't fix the problem.

Then I learned that if you pull back on the handle (to the reverse position stop.....it won't go any farther to the rear unless you push the release button under the handle Charlie mentioned) while pushing on the button, the button will depress and then you can move the handle forward, the button will remain depressed without you pushing on it and you will have your fast idle function. As soon as you pull the handle back to N the button will pop out and you are ready to shift and go.

That does not seem to work on mine, it pops back out when I hit neutral.
Not sure what model mine is, it came from a 1979 80hp merc.

It pops back out when I move the lever forward out of the reverse setting.

It should also pop out when you move the lever to N from the fast idle position so that it is ready to shift the engine at normal idle speed.
