Re: Comments on 4 stroke kicker

Capn Mike & walleyehed,
Good to hear that the vibration is not a problem.
walleyehed,
It looks like I will be getting either the Yamaha 8 High-Thrust or the Yamaha F8 Regular. I noticed that the High-Thrust @ 102 lbs is approx 20 lbs heavier than the F8. Is the 102 lbs a problem when you have to lift the motor up when you are in the boat.
---
Al

I pull my honda 8hp kicker (approx 90 lbs) with very little effort.
the new 8hp yamaha highthrust comes with a power tilt option which works great.
not sure what that option costs ??

Re: Comments on 4 stroke kicker

I would make one recommendation on this...If using mostly as a kicker, go with the standard 8HP....the high-thrust is designed for use mostly in the 2500-3000RPM range, and has the feature of a double-duty prop system that allows efficient reverse by directing exhaust gases thru the FRONT of the hub.
The only reason I have the high-thrust is because I ran into a gent in need of some money and I paid 800 bucks for it....

Can you please elaborate on this?
---
Al

Re: Comments on 4 stroke kicker

Not a higher RPM, it's the same, but because it uses a prop with much more blade area, it's best torque is between 2500-3000 RPM...useless in the case of a kicker. Between the 2 choices, there is no advantage of one over the other when used at near-Idle speeds.
The HT has a Ratio that allows it to turn a bigger prop with less pitch, slower than the smaller prop of the standard 8, but both would show about the same results at low RPM.

One more engine to look at would be the Merc 9.9 Bigfoot and the 9.9 ProKicker. The ProKicker can be had with power tilt. Both come in 20 or 25 inch shaft with dual water inlets and larger gears and 2.42:1 gear ratio. Great for a kicker, but not as main motor. Weight about 100 pounds. Electric start models have 6 amp alt output. Cost between 2100 and 2600 depending on how equiped.

Couple of questions.
Those with the 8hp HT Yamaha what is the propeller diameter and pitch?
How effective is the 6 amp alternator output while trolling?
--
Al

I don't have my boat right here, so I can't give you the prop size. I can't give an opinion of the stator either, cause I don't have mine hooked into the system, but need to for night-time trolling with lights on...

FWIW - Just went through the Portland Boat Show, and almost every non-Brunswick boat with a kicker is carrying the Yamaha high-thrust. Most were 9.9 (didn't think to look @ the 8 hp to see if high-thrust). Even heavy 30' glass boats use the 9.9.

As a side note, how long can I hold out before I spring for a 24 or 27 Sea Sport? Dang, they're nice boats.....

Re: Comments on 4 stroke kicker

Finally after a lot of reading and discussion I made the decision and purchased a Yamaha 8hp High Thrust kicker. :D
