Hello,

I just winterized my boat and i ended up replacing the lower unit with a new SEI unit so i decided to make a cover to protect it from the snow and ice and i thought i would share a pic of what i did. Please comments are encouraged of this pic, tell me what you think if this is a good idea or not. :D

Please tell it like it is, i won't cry:cool:

Mouse house? I guess if I were to park my boat outside and were worried about the drive, I'd just wrap it in the type of stretch clear plastic that you use to hold stuff to pallets.

That particle board probably won't last either, it does not like getting wet.

yes....leave the drive in the down position.....

if you have the time and materials, why not.......but a plastic bag and shrink wrap tape works great as well.

Looks like an innovative approach to me. Kudos. Ignore the negative comments. Put a small pan underneath with a few moth balls and there will be no mouse problems.

Ummm. not sure why you didn't just wrap it in plastic and zipp tie it. Looks like a lot of extra work for no reason to me. Not ripping you, just saying. That flakeboard once wet will draw all sorts of critters/bugs.

Looks fine, but do heed the critter warnings!! Give some thought to just removing it for the winter, not that difficult, store it in your garage or down the basement. They are really not that heavy, I am 60 yrs old, made a stand to assist with the removal and install but have no difficulty giving the outdrive a big bear hug and carrying it wherever necessary. Mine stays in my heated garage and the boat out in the barn.

3-2009, 4-2009 027.jpgcobra 2.jpgcobra.jpgWow now thats nice little drive house! I take mine off for winter because I feel you have to check the bellows for water and the gimble bearing and ujoints for wear....I built a stand to make it easy, with casters so I can just roll it in the garage...

Re: Comments on Sterndrive cover!!!!!

ya got the whole drive hidden under there? if so. generally speaking, ya should remove the drive for pm for winter layup. ie. lub ujoints, lub coupler, be sure ya ain't got water intrusion into the drive shaft bellows, check alignment.
this was what i did....

what that is, is a scrap piece of oem Plexiglas (center panel) for my aristocraft nineteen (ya could use anything flat, plywood?). there is a aftermarket cover that bolts up to the bell housing that ya can buy, but it's kinda elusive to find. this does the same thing, it covers the bell housing hole. i just didn't wanna buy one so came up with this. a vitamin c bottle epoxied to the Plexiglas accommodates the shift slide, it's in reverse so it fits inside the bottle. the Plexiglas cut to just wide of the gasket dimensions. took me a hour + or -. just cut off some spare hose to accommodate the mercrusier flat washers and oem nyloc nuts to hold the cover on, nuts not threaded to the nyloc part, easy to put on.. wasn't to accurate when i cut it. works great. usually the bell housing gasket comes off intact. it makes a seal between the home made cover and the bell housing. this year the gasket broke. still looks like it'll work ok. cost. zero ( broke spent oem aristocraft Plexiglas center panel). hour labor over a beer or three..
drive gets stored in the basement for pm over the winter.. i store block and manifold dry. no anti freeze. though the the pic shows the last year i did use anti freeze... ;)

extra...

Sam, I'd say you've earned the redneck overengineered of the year award.... WAY too much work but if it works for you, go for it.... BTW if it were me and I couldn't get the drive down,I'd remove it.... If I didn't want to remove it, I'd put a HEAVY garbage bag over the drive, wrap it around real tight and wrap it with a tarp strap... You could do that AND put your critter house back over it too

Well, If you had an OB you could just tilt it down :D

As for the mice, I intend on decimating the little bastards with some bird shot.
