Re: Common courtesy (lack of)

Yep, it's the law. It has never been enforced but there's an awareness program on the radio and television warning people that cops are on the water. I was on my way out for a nice day trip with my girly and another couple. My buddy with his hot rod boat calls me on the cell phone. I answered it (by mistake apparently) and then instead of a leisurely cruise we spent the whole day going way the heck out to nowhere and towing him back. He'd have done the same but still...
it's a tough one but if someone's broken down, I stop to help. Ya' never know...

Re: Common courtesy (lack of)

Boaters in NH and Maine have been quick to help me out in the past.

We rented a Lake house for a week in NH and a friend stopped by on his jet ski to visit. When he got to our dock he accidentally dropped his dockline and immediatly sucked it into his impeller. There was no easy way to get it out at our dock. The guy in the 2+ million dollar house next door saw us struggling with it and offered to let us use his (really nice) boat house and hoist to lift the jet ski out of the water. He even hopped in the water to help us walk it into the boat house and then lent us a socket set to pull the cover off the bottom of the pump. Classy guy.

Last year we rented a different lake house in NH and one very windy day I was having trouble docking since I had to dock on the lee side of the dock due to shallow water on the windward side. The wind would blow the bow away from the dock before my 10 year old daughter could get a line on a piling. The folks in the (awesome) 4+ million dollar house next door ran over and lended us a hand.

I always figured "wealthy folks" would be less tolerant of "lowly renters" but in both cases, they were extremely helpful and nice. We try to pay it forward whenever we can.

It is like this in almost any aspect of life now.
If you ride motorcycles and you pull off the side of the road you will have plenty of people offer to help. Breakdown in a car and you are on your own.
Some good stories of people helping each other here.
