Re: Common problems on 2 posts.
I guess the day I seen it all they will plant me. its incredible the amount ya get to learn each day.
but if ya do this 20-30 years and sprinkle in a few other carreer moves its usually fairly simple.
I got involved in a trouble shoot on a 115 yam the other day, lead tech wanted to pull the VST(major pain) due to a lack of fuel from the lower two injectors yet fuel pressure was steady at 35psi. I had to stop and ask him if fuel rail pressure is in spec and steady why do you want to pull the VST. most of what I do is common sense coupled with an understanding of how it works. the key is to understand how each subsystem works with the other subsystems to make a system. cannot be done without studying the manuals and a bit of reasearch. I have posted the best book any novice tech could ever hope to read yet I somehow doubt anyone actually bought one. I still refer to my copy occasionally and my mom gave it to me for christmas of 75 and I was about 14. I have done this tech gig a year or two.
thats why I work as a contractor to a few marinas, mostly I get stuck with the menial sterndrive work and inboard stuff until someone gets stuck. then I get to play

. my main love is outboard work however the rest pay well. but over the years it all becomes the same. aint but so many ways to make a motor,an induction system,an ign system or an ex system and its the same with power transmission. same with trim. aint but so many ways to make it and the easiest way to repair them is to do a little study on how it works, does not have to be brand specific ya just have to understand how it works then read the specific manual to see how this guy put the product together.
one of the biggest problms with the fuel system on the 2.5,3.0 motors with mechanical fuel pumps is the non accessible filter on the pump itself. most the time its just quicker to pop the pump off to change it.
