Comp. Ski Boat in semi-rough waters

I am going to buy a pre-owned boat this year. I have been looking at your standard open-bow runabout. (4 Winds, Sea Ray, Chaperal) I just want a fun, family boat. I plan to pull tubes, skis, and wakeboards. I have owned a similar boat. I know how they do in the local rivers and lakes.
I just came across a 1990 Supra Competition ski boat. It is in perfect shape and is reasonably priced, but I have never ridden in a Comp. ski boat. Are they, being semi-flatbottomed, as rough riding as I think they are??

I could use any help at all here.

The inboards do not ride the greatest in rough waters. They are not designed for it. Some do ride OK in fairly rough water, though. Best bet is to take it for a test drive on a windy day. Be careful with the Supras in waves. The way the nose slopes down on their boats makes it very easy to take a wave over the bow.

I forgot to mention. It would be a 6 hour round trip to test drive this boat. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth the time.

Here on the mississippi river we get some decent waves from wind and other boaters. To put it bluntly they suck in heavy chop. they pound the owners horribley yet people still buy they. around here alot of people buy them for show and not for praticalty reasons but thats just my opionion

we got a 1977 correct craft and you have to be carefull even turning around and crossing your own wake to pickup a skier not to take some over the bow

a littel bit to slow and its over the windshield

tommays

TS6M?

Terrible in rough water. Having had 3 different family friends with them I have spent a good amount of time on them. They are very rough riding. They sit very low and can get swamped pretty easily...(don't go too fast in reverse :?)

Great boats for smooth water and they pull very well.

I do remember at one time we had one of them out on Lake Michigan....don't try that at home. An inboard boat airborne? I saw it with my own eyes from a nice smooth riding boat running along side the Supra. A sight to be seen for sure.

i have a sister boat from supra...saltare

the comp sits very low, very little freeboard. they are built for slalom skiing with just a couple of people in the boat. they do what they do (slalom skiing) extremely well. a few people and their gear and there's not much room left...and you'll be riding low in the water.

take a look at sangerwalker's avatar...the comp doesn't sit any higher at rest. toss some rougher water in the mix and your back seat guests will be soaked.

6 hours to test drive...i'd pass, it's not a family style boat.

I had a Supra comp ts6m... It was very easy to stuff the bow while idling or sitting still... 1' or 2' wake, you're wet!..

Cruising, it would ride bow-high enuff that stuffing the bow was'nt an issue, but the thing would rattle your teeth out in a chop...

But, DAMN it was/is a sexy boat!..... :D

The bigger V-drives are not so bad. But they aren't comp inboards either.

Kelly Cook

Hey Salty, ya shoulda been with last year when we went camping on the Mississippi.....4-5 foot swells on Lake Pepin. We were loaded to the max, too. Was not any fun. I've never wanted to get out of my boat so bad in my life!

Well, that's a bummer. It is what I suspected, but it is a very nice boat. Thanks for all the info.
