Compact Fuel Tank

I have a 10 foot rowboat we are going to use to fish out of. We have a 4 HP outboard to use with it. My question is about a fuel tank. The smallest I have seen available is a 3 gallon, which is still overkill for a small 4 HP outboard. Someone told me to make my own out of a VRO tank. Any info is appreciated.

I assume you'd have said so, but doesn't the 4hp have it's own built-in fuel reservoir?

No, no internal tank. That is my point, it seems such a small motor that a 3 gallon tank is overkill. I was thinking something along the line of 1 to 1.50 gallons would be more than enough for what we will need.

I have found it is alot better to have way to much gas than to find out you don't have enough, you would just need to get gas every 2-3trips instead of every time.

VRO tank will work, but likely be expensive to buy. Any kind of heavy duty plastic container with a low center of gravity will work. A red Jerry Can that fits my description would be ideal. You would need to modify the cap to install a fuel pickup and vent. A couple of brass fittings to connect the fuel hose to a fuel pickup hose is all you will need.
