For marine compasses the fluid in nearly universal use is a solvent from Exxon called Isopar. It replaced Odorless Mineral Spirits and the earlier Varsol. It comes in three viscosities for use on different makes and under different conditions. The medium and high viscosities are used by Danforth and C.Plath while the low viscosity is almost universal. The Japanese and one German manufacturer still use alcohol as do the Russians. Ritchie uses Isopar-L.
