Compass & Stereo Speakers

I recently installed a stereo on my Mac 25. There were existing holes for the speakers in the bulkhead. There is one that is near my compass. The magnet causes my compass to deviate. I just re-upholstered the bulkhead where the compass and speaker is mounted. My question is will I be able to swing the compass enough to compensate for this? Or, should I relocate the speakers? I want to determine this before I recut the holes in the new fabric. Any suggestions?

Mike

Re: Compass & Stereo Speakers

Hi vaccfam, the problem you have is why computer speakers mounted on the sides of the monitor have built in shielding to prevent the magnetic field from distorting the monitor picture. In your case you may be able to adjust and eliminate the compass error with the stereo off since the speakers magnetic field is constant, but with it on the field coil in the speaker has a varying magnetic field, you could try an experiment, watch the compass as you use the stereo, if the compass drifts or moves I would relocate the speakers, or try to but shielded speakers. Good luck.

If that compass is anything more than just a decoration, I'd move them too.

Re: Compass & Stereo Speakers

I have the same problem with my compass in reference to my sonar/gps unit which is just a few inches away from it. the compass will swing a great deal when I power up the unit -- however, I really never use the compass (and if the gps fails -- the compass will work) so I haven't relocated it for the same reasons that you have mentioned -- unsightly holes
