I've got a 1995 OMC / VOLVO joint venture 4.3 L (43APHUB) and am in a situation where I need to replace the outdrive. Just wanted to know if I can use a MERC CRUISER outdrive with this engine. Im figuring that parts for the Merc drive will be more easily found and less expensive and would prefer to get away from the Cobra that is currently on the boat. Unfortunately I had major mechanical breakdown and need a new outdrive. Also would appreciate any suggestions about the best place to look for outdrives.

Any input is appreciated

Did you also ask this on the hull truth?
If so I answered there...

Yes I did Lou, thanks for responding. Im up in the air based on responses Ive heard. The Mercruiser option is cheaper for the drive but seems like more work to do with the conversion kit and then with modifying the shift lever and other onboard aspects people mention. But to buy a replacement OMC cobra is much more expensive Im really unsure what to do here

Remember your joint venture Cobra is really a Volvo SX; which is more expensive than a Merc Alpha but quality wise is equivalent to the Merc Bravo series.
Forget the SEI conversion kit; it is only for the older dog clutch Cobra like the one I have. It will not work on the joint venture model. I'd get the Volvo pay the extra money and go boating.
