Hello all,
I just picked up an old 18hp for my next project. The engine is ok. Great compression, good spark, water pump was recent. Plug wires are newer. Prop has a big chunk missing. I'm worried with all of the lower unit, exhaust housing & prop damaged that I don't have a bent lower unit , bent exhaust housing or bent shafts. I don't have any of the "special" tools to check the housing for bends. The gears looked good. Has a lot of cosmetic issues to tend to:
Stern Bracket has cracks & a big chunck/break
Lower Mount Housing on the bottom of the exhaust housing cracked (port side)
Tiller handle cracked
Lower unit cavitation plate broken off on one side
I know that a lot of the '57 to '73 era motors have, for the most part, interchangable parts.
Can someone with access to pre '68 parts manuals let me know what year motors I can scavenge parts from? Many thanks in advance!
