Greetings All,

First time owner here... Just bought a 21' pontoon boat with a 1998 Mercury Force Power Series 40 motor hanging on it. SN 0E339847 ELPT.
I'm sure I'll have a million questions, but please let me start with a few simple ones...

Can anyone recommend a good service manual?? Possessing some old British bikes and cars, I've been forced to become fairly mechanically inclined... Yet I gotta believe boat motors are a whole different animal. Also, forgive the "basicness" of this question but is this motor Oil-injected??? Is this motor considered to be fairly reliable?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Welcome Nels!

Reliable if well maintained. Unfortunately not oil injected. It is premix. E.g. add oil to petrol 50:1 ratio. TC-W3 grade outboard oil.

I use a manual that I downloaded online but I?m sure there are better manuals around

I have both of the main service manuals Seloc and Clymer. The Clymer is a little more detailed with better pictures. The downloadable programs are great but unless you have a laptop/notebook you can't take it to your boat. I think the Seloc was about $25 and the Clymer was around $45. Not to take business away from iBoats, but Amazon have great deals.
