Just wandering how to remove the transom. Also the best technique to do it that you feel would be the best work done. Should I use pressure treated wood, ACX plywood or should I just leave it alone and wrap a piece of aluminum on both sides and not take the transom out and just replace the stringers and the floor. Very new to this so all the suggestions yous can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all,

wow half the work is done. To clean the transom get a chisel some screwdrivers and pick away the wood from the outer skin of the boat. Then clean out all the foam the stringers deck and any other wood that is rotten which will most likely be all of it from the pics. Most people use a good quality exterior ply or marine grade ply for wood replacement. and a lot of fiberglass resin. this project will get expensive not sure of your budget or time you want to put in but it takes a lot of both. Welcome to Iboats and welcome to the resto threads. I am just getting back to my build after getting some funds and time.

Welcome to iBoats.

First take a lot of measurements. Since you have the cap off you need to ensure you know what the measurements are now so you can ensure they are the same when you put everything back. They often change once you get everything torn out and start stomping around inside the bare hull. Measure the stringer height now at various places and record it so you can repeat it. Keep that piece of transom for a template. Get everything cleaned out of the boat. Remove all of the foam. Use a Sawzall and cut the stringers out flush with the bottom of the hull. Make sure to wear protective clothing. A tyvek suit is manadatory. Use baby powder to coat your entire body. It really helps keep the itch down. Wear a full cover respirator. They cost about $125 dollars but it's the best investment you'll make for this project. Wear gloves You will Sweat A LOT!!!! A 4 1/2 inch grinder with a back up pad and 24 or 36 grit resin coated sanding discs will make your task of removing the wood and old fiberglass a lot easier. Search the forum for Transom and Stringer repair threads. You'll find a lot. Read and Study what you find. Post a lot of pics. Ask a lot of questions. You WILL get a lot of help. If you are willing to do the work, spend the time and the money(approx $1,500), you will have a boat that will last for decades and give you years of enjoyment. Does she have a working motor? You asked about plywood. Arauco plywood from Lowe's or Home Depot is very good stuff. If you can't find that, ask for Floor Underlayment. If you can't find that ask for MDO plywood. If you can't find that ask for Exterior Grade plywood used for Roofing Underlayment. 5/8" or 3/4" is what you will need. Check the first link in my signature below for some drawings and details on how to do some of the things you will need to do. We're here to help so ask away!!

Also forgot to say she does have a working motor it is a 115hp mercury which will more than likely need to be rewired as well bc it has not been on the water since 2005 needs a new stator as well the wires are dry rotted.

Need help with the transom Also have some new pics of my project

Thank yous all for the great help yous have given me this far. I am wandering how to attach the transom to the fiberglass. What should I use to attach it and the best way to attach it. how to install the transom since I am new to this wasn't to hard to pull the transom out. Shocking that I have it somewhat full for a form.
Thank you all once again.1.jpg1.jpg2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg

try not to start new posts on the same boat as its hard to see where you started and what you have already been told. im sure a they will merge this to the original to keep it easier for people to keep up with your rebuild.

well grats on getting the cap off and the transom out. i hope you have some measurements and the boat surported or you will have to put the cap back on to get the shape because from now on any problem you build into the boat will only get bigger near the end.

if you have read the stickys you will have a general idea but just in case the basics are

you need to grind using a 4-1/2" grinder with a flapper disk (sand paper glued on disk in layers) then grind the transom and at least 8" of the sides of the boat until it looks clean. you will see when the old fiberglass starts to look clean so dont go nuts.....use ppe including dust mask, googles, tylex suit, etc or you will be itching for weeks.
not going to into to much detail as its easier to read woodens thread as its the basics most of us follow

Congrats on your project kickoff! I am in the works myself, just going to get a few more weekends out of her before I begin demo... I think that will help with the motivation for finishing! Anyway, it looks as though you have a great deal of work already done. All I can say is that if you look at the threads in this forum, and check out the stickies, you will get more info than you expected which will give you a great baseline of knowledge for keeping it going. Great work and stay motivated!!! Post more pics!!

This is in the details of the links in WoodOnGlass's signature links:
My Recommendations on how to fabricate Decks, Stringers and Transoms. These drawings are based on my experiences and the vast amount of information I have gleaned from all the Pros and Skilled Amateurs and their projects here on the Forum. These are NOT set in stone, only Recommendations. It's your boat, so you can do as you see fit.

Decks - The new Araucao Plywood is Really Good stuff. I recommend it now for Deck, Stringers and Transoms.

Pics of clamps I recommend for clamping an Outboard Style Transom when the top cap of the boat has been removed. I modified the construction of them just a bit using bolts instead of all thread. Takes a bit longer to build em but I like em better. Doing it this way I can use my 3/8" air drive ratchet to tighten em down which make is a lot faster to clamp em down. You need to be as fast as possible when you are using that much PB. Don't want it to set up on you before you get it clamped in place. Speed is of the essence!!!!:D

But before you start working on replacing the transom, you need to fully inspect the stringers. These pix ^^^ look like there has been a good bit of water has spent a fairly long time in the bilge & under deck areas of the hull. It's a lot of work to replace any of the 3: Deck, transom or stringers; but to do 1 or 2 now, and not the 3rd may lead to a redo sooner then later. If the wood encased in fiberglass stringers are good to go, great! If not they definitely need to be done before the transom & deck are buttoned up.

What type of wood would be best to use for the stringers because those are rotted as well might as well do the complete overhaul now so that I wont be doing it a year or two down the road. And what exactly is the pb stuff. should I go with pressure treated or acx plywood funds are on the low side would love to do everything in marine grade but what do yous feel comes close to it. What would last as long or close to as long as marine grade.
Thank you all again.

Re: Need help with the transom Also have some new pics of my project

pressure treaded is a no no. marine ply is great but no one uses it because most of us are married so exterior grade ply is used instead. Arauco Plywood is what i used but theres cheaper boards at your local home depo or lowes just make sure its exterior grade.

pb.....that one gets new builder......it stands for peanut butter......poly resin mixed with 1/4" chop strand and cabosil......its used as a filler the cabosil is a thickner and the strand is for strenth. when mixed they will look like smooth peanut butter so thats where it gets its name.

this is a good site to judge prices against http://www.uscomposites.com/index.html
so you know what the market value is before shopping around. i think the resin is a bit over priced and you can proberly get that local cheaper as if its delivered theres a extra $25 charge on the 5 gallon bucket......i payed $125 before tax 2 weeks ago for 5 Gallons of layup poly so use that as a guide (make sure its layup or no wax resin or you will be sanding forever) part of building the boat is about shopping smart but still using quality materials.
other things you will use are csm 1.5oz mat......1708 bi-axle.....5200 sealant....cabosil.....1/4 chop.....paint brushes (lots of cheap ones)....accatone gallon plus.....flapper disks (goes on grinder and looks like layers of sandpaper glued on)....gel coat and color agent...foam 2lb flotation. you are looking at about $1500-1700 on materials to get a boat thats good for 20 years and you dont need to buy them all today
