Composite for replacing a sections of deck?

Hi all,

I have a 1987 Reinell 215c that is nearing the need to have a couple of small sections of deck replaced. One is the section that is approximately 2'x3' directly forward of the engine compartment. After 20+ years it is getting a little soft, at least along the aft edge. I don't think it is rotting, just getting soft from being walked on all this time. I can only see the aft edge of the piece and it does not appear to be glassed. Just painted plywood, and there doesn't seem to be any additional support across the aft end so it is only 3/4" plywood. It does not appear to be structural and is mostly there to cover the gas tank.

I also have a removable section of decking forward of that. It is the same width, but closer to 2.5' long, and is carpeted on all sides. It has been banged around, dropped, kicked and generally abused for 20+ years too, and it has softened to the point where it is getting dangerous. It is supported on the sides only and there is an extra piece along the forward end for additional support, but nothing along the aft edge for some reason.

What I am considering is pulling those sections out and replacing them with something like StarBoard, or some other waterproof composite material. I have read several threads that discuss composites for stringers and transom use, but I haven't found anything yet that discusses using it for decking. Especially a small sections like these that do not appear to be structural.

My two main concerns are 1) - would a 3/4" thickness be strong enough to support people walking on it? and 2) I understand that there are no adhesives that will stick to it, so how would I get carpeting to stay put? Is there anything else I should be aware of?

TIA,

Wayne

Your Deck is compost.

Stringers and transom is subject at this point as well..sorry..

Starboard ?? that is some gold plated board if your even considering it.

Time to look/search the boards here and get an idea from beginning to end at what your looking at ( These threads are like a crystal ball :) ).

Good luck and keep us updated..

Transom is solid as well as everything else I can get to. I realize that may change when I get that one section of deck out, but for now I have no reason to suspect the stringers or anything else. The rest of the decking is also in very good condition and it has been subjected to more moisture than the center section. It is also glass coated where this center section is not.

I also realize that StarBoard or one of the other like products might be a little more expensive initially, but not to the gold plated category yet. At least not to me. Maybe silver plated. :D When I checked about 6 months ago, a 3/4x4x8 sheet of Starboard was just a little less than twice the cost of marine grade plywood of the same dimensions. I'm going from memory so I could be wrong, but I remember the marine grade plywood to be $95 and the StarBoard was $180. But it could be cheaper in the long run.

Thanks,

Wayne

Starboard wouldn't be my first choice. It would be slippery as all heck and you can't coat it with anything cuz nothing sticks to it.

I wouldn't even pay for marine ply, regular ext grade PT is fine.
1/4 inch sheet, lay up 3 sections to make up 3/4 thickness would be very strong. I think you'll find rot damage beneath deck as you get into it.
Its over 20 yrs old now.

I want your suppliers number :).

the last full sheet of 3/4" 4x8 cost us about 400 bucks plus..

OK. My rememberer is broken. I was trying to clear a path in my room to get to the window and found the quote for the StarBoard. A 4x8 sheet of 3/4" was $456, so plywood is looking MUCH more attractive now. :( What I was remembering was a 3/4"x1'x8' was $150.
