Composite Prop

I may have just wrecked my 140hp Chrysler, and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to put a composite prop on it...like a piranha propeller, would that then be the weakest link, in stead of my drive shaft spline?

Re: Composite Prop

Hi, denniston. My experience with the composite props is that they feel Mushy when applying power. They will sheer easier than aluminum or SS, but you will lose horsepower at the prop. I've never run one for very long so I can't say how they hold up. Did you run aground with your 140 Chrysler? I don't believe that the composite prop will provide that much additional protection. Hope this helps.

Re: Composite Prop

What happened was I was testing the boat (first time) and I was low on fluid in the trim res. so when I hit the power it went strait down, and by that time of fiddeling I was over in some shallow rocky area.

I'm just afraid that without any sheer pin on my motor I'm gonna wreck it for sure. I don't know if my prop can be re-vulcanized or not. I like the idea of a composite prop where I can change a broken fin in a few minutes. Instead of loosing a whole day...I guess I wish this old chrysler just had a sheer pin :(

Re: Composite Prop

They're all like that now, relying on the prop hub to do the job that the shear pin used to do.
Composite props are not worth the price, IMHO...
I would still not hesitate to get one, but only to thoss into the aft compartment for use as a spare. Your old prop can usually be reconditioned by a good machine shop, cheaper than you can purchase a new one for.
Also, look on ebay for used props. New ones are still available online here, but try to stick to the stock pitch, for continued reliablity.

Re: Composite Prop

The one I have the guy who owned it before me said he had it ground down once, and So I was thinking maybe it would be worth it to buy a new one. The local shop told me prolly around 60 bucks to fix this one. Have you seen the pirinha propellers? Neat concept. hard hit, just change the fin, supposedily 15% stronger than aluminum, and about the same price. Until you have to have an aluminum one fixed. $17/blade for the composite replacements...not too bad IMHO. Whatcha think?

Re: Composite Prop

I went and bought the Hustler prop. it is a hub and prop 2 piece thing. I had to buy a thrust washer and it fit fine on my 88 85 hp. The hub was 60 and the prop was 65. all you need if you ding it is the prop again. I got it from Phil's props shop as He knows the combo of the prop, hub and thrust washer that works.
