1985 Johnson V4 -90hp

Well guys and gals, I think I've done my homework but wanted to check here to see if it is right... I had a fuel pump problem a week or two ago and replaced all my lines from the tank to the old fuel pump and replaced the pulse limiter... took the boat out and it still starved once I got above 2200 RPM (motor would run good and then sputter. If I hand pumped it it would run perfect).

With that, I pulled both heads to check for cylinder scars and found nothing. The cylinders look great :D ! So I purchased a new fuel pump and will install it tonight and run it tomorrow...

If the new pump doesn't work, I have a feeling its the motor and I will do a rebuild. How much compression does the motor need to run the fuel pump? Right now I have Top L - 118, Top R - 118, Bottom L - 118, Bottom R - 117. Also which cylinder does the fuel pump work off of? If I were taking a guess it would be the bottom left cylinder.

I am new to boating but have a pretty good understanding of two stroke motors... Thanks in advance for all your help and one day I will be able to supply information to help this forum!!!

Robert

Re: Compression and fuel pump

The pump isnt operated by compression. Its run by pulses from the crankcase caused by the pistons going up and down.

Your compression numbers do look good though. I have a feeling that with the new pump you'll be off to the races.

Good luck!
