Renny, You can install all six pistons, and then bolt them to the crank. If you have the small hex head connecting rod screws, you might replace them with new ones and put a drop of locktite on each. I had one break on me and the rod went thru the block.

You should not be breaking rings while installing the pistons. If you have the two ring pistons, the rings are keystone shaped and only fit one way.

no i have the 3 ring piston and nut an bolt on the rod which only go one way and if installing before connecting to crank i cant get at bolts believe i have tried

Renny, I am not sure what to recommend next. I was able to install the rod bolts and their locknuts w/o incident. I used my 7/16 box wrench to tighten them.

engine back together now just about to put back onto mid section and realised i forgot to put one of the piston rings on took the transfer ports cover off and its the middle one of number 4 piston if i put the powerhead on and start her up with only 2 rings on that piston what will happen????? apart from a bit of low compression???
