I'm looking to buy a 1987 90hp Merc. The motor started easy, idled smooth, and accellerated fine. I was ready to buy it when we talked about a compression test. All 3 cylinders tested a 90lbs. Is this ok? I thought 115-120 was a normal reading but the owner says that as long as they are all the same is important. what do ya think?

He is mostly right in my opinion. Compression gauges are not always that accurate and if you retested with another compression gauge you might get higher numbers. Also, testing procedures can vary and affect the actual numbers your see on the gauge. It is generally accepted that if the compression readings are all within 10% of each other, the compression test result is considered OK. If compression on all three are almost exactly the same, as in your case, I think that is a very good sign that the motor is in good shape.

Having said this, I would expect to see compression over 100psi on a used motor of that vintage. I don't have that particular size/year motor so someone with a comparable year/size motor can give you better first hand advice.

Re: Compression question?

does less compression equal less horsepower? like in this case would a 90hp really only produce around 80hp?
