Serevice manual says it has a compression release up to 1961.

Be a flat piece of shiny steel off the recoil going back to the head, pushing an upright rod that pushes on two springs on the head. Can't miss it. IF you have one. Dunno on the 40hp

I have the springs on the head, but nothing off of the recoil. The friend of mine that just picked up the starter to rebuild. thought it might have one as it does have the springs and two bolsters that look like they would have such a mechanism. I only have a clymer manual and it doesn't have anything in it about the compression release. Does the compression release need to be working for the starter to be able to crank it? Of was this something you could use when rope starting it?

This was only used when rope starting. When using elec. start, it wasn't in play.

Fred, My '61 35HP Evinrude had the compression release. When you pulled the starter rope, a flat stainless rod rode a guide in the recoil mechanism, causing it to twist pushing the spring loaded valves into the head, releasing some of the compression.

I always found it easier to start by disabling it. The pistons don't suck as much fuel thru the carbs.

If your rebuilding the electric starter, it doesn't matter. Only works off recoil. I've got a 58 35hp Recoil here with the lever if you need one (if fits) and I have a 63 40 hp I can check for the bolt pattern. Just dunno on the 61

What are you looking to get out of that recoil assembly?

I sell parts on ebay. The most fair way would be for me to list it, and the highest bidder gets it. Laying off until after Christmas (FedEx and the PO not fun places this time of year), but if interested, I could put it up after the 1st. Email me at hogrider@myway.com with Recoil in the subject line, and we can take it from there.
