I'm curious as to what the rod going from a guide on the flywheel, to a rocker-arm similar assembly on the head is. The things on the head look like some sort of compression release. Is that what they are?

Re: Compression release??????

If you're talking about the old 35's, yep, that's what it is - to assist cranking by the recoil starter.

The early 40hp models incorporated that compression release also. Set the clearance between the release bolt and the valve to (I believe) .020 . It may be .010, I don't recall exactly. Anybody still have the manual on that?

Close enough, Joe. Manual says .015-.025 tappet clearance.

If you are physically able to crank it, it actually will start better with the compression relief disconnected.
