There's a 1996 Johnson 115 SGP I'm looking @ buying, what should the compression be on this motor? is this motor prone to block cracking? I'll be using the motor for skiing.

the motor is 4500 CDN, is that reasonable?

what other things should I be checking when I look for motors?

how many hours are too many?

which years/brands aren't too hot?

Johnson flows through my veins, should it?

TIA.

Welcome!

Lets double check the model number to make sure of what we have.

As long as the compression is no more than 15 lbs different hi to low you'll be good to go.

For skiing set it up to turn at least 6000 without a skiier so that you dont lug it when you do pull one.

On a 2 stroke motor like this I'm not sure there is such a thing as too many hours. Usually the motors will very little use have more problems -- carbs gumming up, things like that.

Good luck!

Alright, as I suspected it's a 1996 115hp Johnson SPL.
it looks just like this motor:
http://www.boats.com/photos/32093721332003911/32093721332003911_102_1Lanier27.JPG

Is there anything else I should check other than the compression?

how can I check the motor's compression without it being mounted to a boat? I've read here that the motor should be warmed 1st to operating temp and then check the compression. If I could idle the motor in a barrel of water with no prop on until it seems warm would that be sufficient?

are there any concerns / things to be aware of with this motor?
I know the mid 80's 60hp VRO motor I have right now that the VRO unit hasn't worked for a long time.

The 115 model numbers I have for 1996 are;
115GLED
115JLED
115ELED
115TLED
115GLED
115TXAD
115SLED
115SXED

Lets verify if its one of those.

You can take compression on a cold motor. We're only looking for a difference in numbers, not a specific number.

15 lbs as stated is the max compression difference between cylinders. A OMC V 4 motor has
compression new of about 120 psi avg Well worn that will go down to 100 psi avg thats about 1800 hours to do that. Mine is a 1988 90 V4 Evin rude running 110 on the high cyls and 95 on the low.about 1700 hrs now on it will be rebuiding soon. OMC motors are extreamly strong as far as cracking blocks ect. In fact everything about the cranks, pistons, rods is very strong.

I have a very good knowledge of 4-strokes and what it takes to rebuild one. When it comes to 2-stroke outboards I'm less knowledegeble.

What would a rebuild invove? just rings/pistions?
or by the time that's needed will new rod/main bearings need replacement too?
what ARE the bearings? (ball bearings I'm guessing, good forever?)
Can any local machine shop re-bore the block?

Now there is also a 1993 Evinrude 115hp that I have found. I'm waiting to hear back from the current owner on the motor model #.

One catch is that it doesn't come with an oil tank or controls.

Will my current boat's controls /oil tank work?

Current motor is a ?1986? Johnson VRO 60hp

thanks.

On a 10 year old outboard I would remove the oil tank and VRO and mix gas and oil but that is just my opinion.

nothing wrong with pre-mixing, My friends 225 vro (very rarely oils) died, and he now pre-mixs with no problem. At least he doesn't have to wonder if the engine is getting enough oil!

The controls and tank on your 86 should work fine on a 93 model.

wow this sure is a common occurance! we've been mixing oil for only about 3years on our 60hp, we thought our motor was so defective @ first! lol.

even the guy selling the thing suggested mixing my own oil! haha

we just mix 50:1 and leave the VRO tank full of oil, it never goes down anymore :p
