Re: Compression test on 64'johnson

Just from reading some of the experts' posts here, I believe the standard is above 100lbs. and even. I'm thinking that "great" would be about 115 on both. I'd also want to run it on the lake, because as a wise person once said--"They all run good in a tank". I'd make sure it didn't jump out of gear while going wide open or slip in reverse. If it ran good after the lake run, if possible I'd want to pull the lower unit oil drain screw and see what it looked like. If the l.u. oil didn't look good, you'll have to reseal it which is a pain, but doable with a little effort. I'd expect a really good price if I were going to have to go to the trouble of resealing it. You might want to grab a couple of 50 cent drain plug washers to replace the old ones if the seller lets you take 'em out and look. If there's a magnet on the drain screw, you certainly wouldn't want to see any metal bigger than peach fuzz on there, and preferably nothing. Black oil in the lower unit wouldn't bother me much, it just means it hasn't been changed in a while.
I'd also inspect under the cowl just to look for any obvious jury-rigging that indicates someone who likes to cut corners.
Good luck, those are good motors..:)

Compression test - all within 10%. I'm not familiar with that powerhead so 100psi may be asking for a bit much. I'll let others weigh in.

Spark Check - on that vintage spark should jump 1/4" in a spark tester.

Check LU for water intrusion.

Take a look on the powerhead and check for any missing paint around the bolt heads indicating repairs. Ask about anything you find.
