Compression test procedures for 4.3L GXI-E

Found a pdf of my Volvo service manual so I can do a compression check, but for whatever reason it doesn't list the procedure for the GXI-E. (2004 4.3L GXI-E)

From the manual:
• To Prevent Sparking:
—4.3GL/GXi-A/B: Remove (grey) 2-wire connector, with purple and grey wires, at ignition coil.
—4.3GXi-C/D: Disconnect crankshaft sensor wire. —With choke and/or throttle plates wide open, crank engine through at least four compression strokes.

If anyone has insight on this or a manual that says something different, I'm all ears. My manual: VPA 7743365 03-2004

The first is disconnecting the coil power so it will not spark. It uses the distributor to send signal to the coil

The second disconnects the crank sensor because the ECM sends signal to the coil

Makes sense - question I have it which one do I do? Guess if I have the 2 wire connector I will know real quick...

If you have a Flat top distributor cap, then disconnect the CPS

If you have a coil that looks like the pic, disconnect both connectors

In addition to this:
1) warm up the engine first, cold comp tests are not that accurate
2) when cranking the engine without starting your impeller is still going to be turning, so I'd keep the water on like half way just to make sure the impeller gets lubrication.

Thanks guys for the tips. My worry is just getting the engine started, let alone warmed up. Headed down tomorrow to work on it so I will report back.

You could just pull the kill chord. You’ll get cranking but no ignition then.
