Did a compression test on my 3,0 1990 motor. The results was ok I think but I don't know much abot motors they read 160 160 160 155. From what I have read that's a healty motor. The problem is that it smokes a lil thought the rings may be bad but guess not. Spark plugs are real smutty black. Never smoked till I put a rebuild kit in carb. I put it in myself then had it checkd by machanic he said it looked ok to him. But he could not tell me what was wrong and why it was smokeing and idleing rough( some machanic huh). Anyone tell me what I could check now or should I just replace the carb. Thanks

Sounding like maybe a float problem ,float level possibly too hi, or sticking needle valve, is the choke plate opening properly? suggest you recheck your measurement of the float, and choke plate.

don't know where you read that but believe it's wrong. The symptoms you have could be caused by this. Why don't you just hook it back up.

I don't even know what particular carb you have

In a quick answer I would have to say yes. It is possible for a casting to become pourous.

If the carb has fuel pouring thru it then the most likely problems are float or the needle and seat that it operates

If you hold the float so the needle and seat are closed can you blow air thru the fuel inlet past the needle valve ( you should not be able to)

Personally I check this with the carb off before I set the float level. hold the needle closed and blow thru the inlet this might be crude but it works
Is there a sealing washer installed with the needle and seat? where it screws into the carb bowl
when the float comes to the top level does it close the valve

This may not be your problem but it is where i would look the most

If this is a quadrajet are the seals on the power valve properly

"Spark plugs are real smutty black" < - that is usually from over fueling

Yea, what kind of carb is this?

You really have to make sure that you replace ALL the parts that come in the rebuild kit. You did use a rebuild kit? Was there rust or other crap in the carb when you took it apart? Did you take care of it? Did you clean the carb when you rebuilt it? What kind of rebuild kit did you use? OEM
