Hi Forum,

First, please excuse my ignorance, I am a first time boat owner, I just purchase 95 Trophy model 2002 with Force 120, I also purchase these books here for my arsenal -

1. Outboard Boater's Handbook by Getchell
2. Outboard Engines - Sherman
3. Seloc's Force Outboard 84-99

And the most value info here on this forum.

I am reading and learning, and I know most of you will say "Nothing can replace experience" :) I totally agree.

I am a Newbie, and please help me out here.

As I reading more and more, Compression test is a must, in order to do so.

1. Warm up the engine.
2. Disable the ignition system by Unplug the LANYARD CLIP, or ground the spark plug boots with an alligator clips.
3. Remove all spark plugs
4. Screw in the compression gage.
5. Crank the engine over same amount of time for each cylinder (5 each time)...

Ok "Disable the ignition system by Unplug the LANYARD CLIP"
What the heck is a LANYARD CLIP???

Sorry I really don't know, and I Google it, but can't really tell if it is or not.

Please check out the picture.

Thanks guys

Re: Compression Test - What is Lanyard Clip??

1st...welcome to the forum Baja...its a great group of well informed boaters.
As for the lanyard clip....well, I had the same enquiry about 2 months ago relative to my compression test.
The great info I got back from Frank C. was that the clip in question is the 'kill' switch clip attached to your dash or your throttle control that you are supposed to fasten to your person.
In case of you getting thrown from the boat or whatever it kills your motor and will not allow a restart until its re-installed.
So...simply pull it off its 'run' mounting and ba-da-bing....no start. That will allow you to 'spin' your engine over for the compression test with no fear or the engine actually firing up.
Good luck and let us know the results.
(hopefully everything is over 100 psi...and then some)

....oops sorry...quick mistake. The guy I referenced in the previous reply should have been Frank A. ....not Frank C....you will find him an excellent source of working knowledge.
Good luck

Re: Compression Test - What is Lanyard Clip??

Hi Big Prairie,

Thank you for the info. The Clip is clip on to the dash. Since I just got the boat, I only took it out once for a ride with the seller, and I start it up with water muff once, but I don?t think I can start the engine without that clip, clip on to the dash.
Can you or anyone tell me if that is a ignition kill switch. I hope it is, otherwise I have to gamble. Or get the alligator clips to ground the spark plug boots (and how do you do that? Ground it to the engine, but Where on the engine?)

Well, I am also planning to do these things before I take out to the ocean ?

? Grease all area on the outboard that needs to be grease.
? Spray Anti-seize spray on all the bolts
? Spray WD-40 or the like, on Engine area (bolts, spring and all that)
? Brush out all rust area and spray with marine paint
? Replace water pump
? Fuel water Seperator (I don?t even know where is it, and if it has one, install one if it doesn?t have one, or replace the filter)
? Replace Fuel filter
? Trailer Brake service (I have no brake on the trailer at all, the master cylinder all rusted, and the brake wire too, I think the back plan need to replace too.
? De-carbonize the engine with sea foam

I also need Marine battery charger (just in case), new Fire extenqushire, air horn and tarp cover.

As you can see, I am about $1000 short right now, my wife is not happy.
And I told her that ?It?s not like a car that broke down on the street, where I can easily pull over on the side of the road; I?m on the ocean, just me and the sky?

Well, I know when I?m done with all these, I will have a great time very soon.

To help the engine turn I always remove ALL sparkplugs from the engine. Its alot easier on your starter too. This puts a stop for sure in any accidental fire up.

My force did 145 on 3 and 130 on the other.

The lanyard switch on the dashboard is a kill switch and what they recommend you pull (by removing the lanyard) when doing a compression test.

There is a small button on the dash that the lanyard will depress when it is clipped on, if this button is depressed, the engine will start, make sure that the button pops out when you pull the lanyard off, mine sticks in sometimes, if yours decides to stick in, you will start your engine when you dont' want to.

I dont' trust the water muffs either, make sure your overheat alarm works, seloc manual shows how to test it.

If you disconnect you plugwires you must ground them to the block or you can destroy your ignition components (if you have your lanyard off, and it in fact works you don't have to worry about this)

I don't know about these lanyard clips. My wife said if I ever fell overboard and disappeared with the lanyard clip , she wouldn't be overly happy about being stranded in the middle of the lake!!

In your case byacey, maybe you should tie the end of the lanyard to the throttle, so when you fall over the boat goes WOT :)

Just as a side note (about the wife and no clip), they sell clips, and if yours breaks (they have pressure on them, sit in the sun all day..)...never hurts to carry a spare if you can't get to the dash to simply yank the 2 wires, and either separate, or attach..

Its important to understand and use your lanyard, especially if your new to boat operation and your carrying cargo as important as your kids(the wife?).Anyway,a lot of people remove the cord from the clip and forget about it(including myself at times).Thats a bad habit to be in,it really could save a life if ever needed.
