1983 80 HP 2 stroke Merc question:
CAN a "cold" compression test be done with both carbs removed? Thanks.

Yeah. I think that would work.

You can do a compression test with the carbs on or off, throttle open or closed. You are looking for consistancy between cylinders, not overall PSI Readings.

Who is to say that your gauge is accurate? Gauges may or may not be accurate, but they usually are reliable (consistant).

I think so. I just did my 88 80hp merc cold. Then i warmed it up some and opened throttle wide, only added about 2 psi per cylinder. Compression was 95,95,98. Did not seem to matter much how it was done. I never did try it after the engine was warmed up to normall operating temp though. NOt great numbers but even. joe
