I want to do a compression check on my Mercury 1400 inline six. I don't have a tester so I'm wondering what to do...should I buy one or could I just go to like an Auto-zone where they have a loan-a-tool program....I'm not sure about that idea!!! But I'm sure y'all can help me

Re: Compression Testers

You can just buy one for around ~$20 at Wal-Mart. It is a handy thing to keep around the house.

Monk, The bottom cylinder is tough to get to with a compression gauge. I bought a standard "push on" compression gauge and added a 90 degree brass elbow. It just fits the # six cylinder.

Re: Compression Testers

If you get the screw-in type it'll have adaptors for different thread lengths. Use the one that best matches the length of your spark plug threads which will probably be the short one. Anything that reaches farther into the cylinder than your plugs will likely get hit by the piston. Don't ask me how I know this.

Re: Compression Testers

I would buy one. Then you will always have it. The only problem with owning one of these is that as soon as the neighbours know you have one you will be amazes how many people need to borrow it. This can be very useful if you have run out of beer !
My neighbours have compression tested everything they own. Lawn mowers, weed whackers, snow blowers, generators, leaf blowers. The thing about it all is, they think that I should "know" what all their equipment should read just because I have one !

Re: Compression Testers

They sell the perfect compression tester for your motor. It is designed to fit into the tight area in the belly pan at the number six cylinder. If you check this web site, marine store, engine parts, tool section, page 2, it is part # 19-9800. The cost is $50.50. Hope the info helps.
