Re: Computer. Programs running in the background

I've tried many times to donate by using the link in the Spybot program, but for some reason it will never connect to the site. It's been a while since I tried, so I don't remember exactly what happened, just know I wasn't able to donate!

Originally posted by Dunaruna:
So far, spybot is completely free and also the best IMO. The authors 'plee' for donations is getting louder, don't know how much longer it will be free???

Aldo

I have found that ad-aware removes some items
that spybot will not...

one will find what the other doesn't, so run both. Anti virus and a firewall, and microsoft users MUST update often. Here is a free update cd for/from Microsoft, at the time it is coming with a free for 1 year anti virus and firewall software trial. Free is good right? Microsoft will ship it to you at there cost!
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp?Locale=en-us

Re: Computer. Programs running in the background

I'll add to this that I like antivirus software like AVG and firewall software like ZoneAlarm partly because they're free, but mostly because I think the computer performs better with these smaller "lightweight" programs than with the heavy-duty apps like Norton and McAfee (ComputerAssociates), which tend to expect you to be running the very latest in processing power with large amounts of RAM too. They add a lot of junk and space and requirements causing the computer to run slower while not adding a lot more protection in my experience.

Also, another good free product that no one has mentioned is Hijack This. I can't remember the link, but it is very powerful (though not the easiest to use necessarily). I've had to use it on a couple of machines that were really hosed up and Spybot and AdAware wouldn't take care of.

On a separate but related note, the registry is one of the worst inventions ever.

I second Ol' Norse on the Zonelabs freeware and NoAdware, and his comment about the registry.

The anti-parasite freeware takes time and patience, though. You get a list of stuff to delete, including registry entries, and have to plod through the whole thing yourself. Two or three hours later, I was thinking $35 wouldn't have been too much for a program that would do all that for me.

Here's a website has alphabetic listings of hundreds of memory-resident programs, listed by the names that appear in the 'Close Program' dialogue box when you cntr-alt-del, with a pretty thorough description of each:

http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_e.htm

I discovered this site by simply googling the names of some task-list entries I didn't recognize. Works pretty good.

jtw

Registry = one of the worst ideas ever from Redmond.

Unlike the .ini text files from days gone by, the only native tools that you can use to fix the registry require that you have windows running...so if you hose your registry, and windows won't boot, you are out of luck.(although I think there are some freeware and third party hacks that can fix it...)

Spyware Blaster (as UU mentioned) and Spyware Guard are also excellent free products from JavaCool software. SB is an innoculator, and SG is a hijack preventer. Both are low profile, small programs which do not get in the way. These work well along side the others mentioned. Spybot S&D 1.3 is the single best in my opinion if you could have only one, but with a few of the others along side you'll enjoy excellent protection. No reason to not have two or three for better coverage. AdAware does indeed work well, sometimes better than Spybot, but be prepared for your antivirus program to have a fit with false virus reports in the AdAware directory.

Man this thread just won't quit! But thats ok as it solved a couple problems for me also.
Thanks guys.

Spybot found a 199 problems and fixed them I guess?? Puter has less hang time now.

PopUP Panicware, WHAT a blessing!

Both will get donations from me! I like most of you don't mind paying for software but like to try it first!
Hey ya wouldn't buy a boat without driving it first! :D

PS
If you do use panicware turn it off before editing your profile here on IBOATS!

I've had so much success at doing things here on IBOATS I'm almost feeling Geeky enough to try to get away from MS Exploider! Naw not that brave :)

Thanks again for your input and websites..
