Re: Concerned neighbor

I think England would be a good example, maybe Spain, etc. Yeah, even Rome to an extent although internal decay of their government was a huge part of it as the big money players bought the leaders off. Come to think of it, that sounds a lot like our government doesn't it. Go figure...

I just sat next to a guy on a plane who had a whole dissertation about how std's took Rome down. I think it was Syphilis?? This guy was a real Roman Empire buff.

While England and Spain are still around as a democratic countries, the still have a monarchy, although not the power that they used to have.
The roman water wheel theory if I remember it right is that the power is at the center and the slats that collect the water on the outside of the wheel are the individuals, they transfer their power to the center point and if the center is rotten it falls apart taking the whole wheel down.

Re: Concerned neighbor

Your going to get a very different views due to geographic location. Here in Lorain, Ohio the city is still bad , we're down in population from 100,000 to 70,000, yet the county is growing. Lots of new homes being built and sold, new businesses, and old ones growing.

Have a friend who's mother passed and he is trying to get 15,000 for her home in the city, not going to happen, he will take 9k but I don't think he'll see that either. The city is trying to buy the older homes and demolish them.

My son's 70's home in Fort Lauderdale was once 1.2m, he bought during the down swing for under 500k and now it's up to 7-8. Not that great of a house for the price.
Up here it would be well under 300k new, even in a great location like it is in Florida.

Miami/Dade county like Colorado was asking what depression? They had one but nothing like the rust belt.
South Florida has a ton of money and the South and Central Americans pumped a ton of money into Miami's economy during the depression.
The south American saying goes something like "make your money at home, but keep it in Miami".
So they come to see their money and spend it.

About 5 years ago the Admiral and I stayed at a hotel close to Miami airport to catch a Caribbean flight early in the morning. I walked to a K-mart for odds and ends that afternoon. The blue light special was first in Spanish then in so bad of broken English I couldn't understand it. Yes, the majority shoppers were local, but the big buyers were South Americans.

The airport security check was hilarious. People leaving Miami for the tropics in 4-5 layers of clothing, bags of plants, fruit, etc....
I guess you can leave the US with stuff that will get into their country but no way they would let you bring it into the US.

I was waiting for the chickens to start running around.

I know of no one that pays that sort of tax, I certainly do not. If you are taking that kind of hit it's time to find a new accountant / lawyer.

Well see, again, it is what it is. There is simply nothing additional an accountant or a lawyer can do. The law is the law. At a certain point you pay all of the tax because you are phased out of almost every single deduction and anything else is illegal. I never thought people ever actually paid these kinds of dollars either and didn't care until I got here and realize it is real. It is truly a real eye opener but it is the reality we face. You work your butt off taking risk for years to become successful only to realize you better watch what you wish for because the reality is I keep very little of my money. The tax tables are what they are and they are shocking. I'm just a regular guy with a couple kids and a wife and as of the end of September, I have now paid $44,000 dollars per month in federal and state income taxes not including property or any other tax in 9 months. Understand that is about $256/per hour ever single hour of the work day. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that much could be taken from me. The numbers don't lie and I certainly wouldn't pay more than the law says I am forced to pay. Now I ask, is that a fair amount of money to pay? I can say I'm not going to be a chump any longer and will stay under the $250,000 level next year. 250k is where things start to ramp up.

Re: Concerned neighbor

The Canadian health care system is both funded by our tax dollar plus a monthly fee.
Price differs per province, single, married, with or with out kids.
And people below the poverty line can get it for free or a reduced rate, dental is not included or is some drugs.
Health care is to a great extent, provincially operated in Canada. In Ontario, I don't believe anyone pays a monthly health fee. - Grandad

I think that this thread ought to be shut down at this point; it is not going in a good direction.

Additionally, I advocate for an enhancement of the forum rules pertaining political discussions to extend them to government policy, economic, and personal finance matters that do not pertain directly to boating or the boating industry.

There are other places on the Internet to have these discussions and having them here detracts from the true mission of the iBoats forums.

Actually, those comments break forum rules. And this is Dockside Chat where pretty much anything but boating is discussed.....

The reason I ask is; I was watching youtube and got onto the current economic situation and also the economic forecast... the fed... the petro-dollar... it went on and on and it was quite alarming.

Re: Concerned neighbor

Start with this: Each year, over 40% of the actual profit in the American economic system is taken by the finance/banking industry. OVER 40% OF GROSS PROFITS. And these guys don't actually make anything that adds to the gross national product.

The people and companies that make tangible products and provide tangible services - the construction industries, General Motors, IBM, Kraft Foods, carpenters, laborers, etc., etc. - get to divide the remaining 60% of the profits taken each year. And this continues whether the economy is doing well or floundering.

The Wall Streeters and finance guys just sit on the banks of the U.S. money stream and divert a huge portion of it into their own accounts. And there is virtually no accountability, as we've seen lately with "settlements" for the Wall Street firms.

Mods will lean harder from here on out to keep the fence up. But we don't like to exert too much pressure, so we will delete the whole discussion if we have to ....

Re: Concerned neighbor

It saddens me that we cannot have a reasoned discussion or chat in a section designated as 'Dockside Chat', which by inference is a varied topic area. As adults, we all know the boundaries and whilst moderators do have an important job to do to keep threads on track and to 'police' for bad language, insults, etc, I would have thought that censorship was a big No-No area for moderators to step into.
Economics and politics are what drives this country and any country for that matter. Those two factors create the environment for consumers to have the income and spare cash to pursue leisure activities such as boating, which in turn helps drive the economy, provides jobs and indirectly keeps this forum afloat.
I for one joined this forum for the boating technical knowledge that exists by the truckload from all over the world, BUT I do enjoy the odd chat and 5 cents input on the Dockside chat. it is a welcome relief from trying to keep a boat afloat.
I would hope that members AND Moderators can see and value that viewpoint, without coming the big stick.
