Does anyone have experience with them? We are looking to put in a master bathroom and would like something different and have fell in love with a concrete vanity top. Just wondering if anyone has one or not or has made them?

Ski we did a kitchen at mom in laws about 1 yr ago it was fairly strait foreward. Find a business that sells all the forms, Color, and cement they will usualy have videos on instalation. The possibilites are endless on what you can do. If you have basic carpentry skills it shouldnt be to hard.

Look up your local Mafia Chapter, they are experts when it comes to subtle nuances of concrete and making it sink.

Re: Concrete Sinks

Yep, concrete sinks ... usually. I remember visiting my Dad in Toronto in 1973 or 74 (he was on a temporary assignment there) and going to a park to watch college guys compete in a concrete canoe race. Huge team to get the canoe off a trailer and into the water, then paddle like mad to make very little headway. Wonder if that's been done since then.

Anyway, Chuck implied some very good advice. _The Family Handyman_ magazine has had a few articles about sinks and countertops made from concrete and other new / nontraditional materials. There are issues with them, but people can be happy with them. I's suggest you do a lot more research and reading before proceeding.

I just checked a homeowner site I'm also on http://www.mlive.com/forums/homeimprovement/index.ssf and couldn't find any thread about it, but it's worth you asking if you're really interested.

They made ships out of concrete during WW1 & 2 due to a lack of steel.

Ski the company we bought all the materials from was called the Stamp store They specialize in stamped and decorative concrete their website did not have any pics. Look in your area for decorative concrete and they should have or know where you can go.

They still do this.

ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) sponsor the event for College ASCE Chapters.

Its all about alternative aggregates and light weight concrete. One aggregate used it Styrofoam beads.

they also do scale bridge building.

I wasn't involved with these but I had some Friends tha did them. Back in school.

Re: Concrete Sinks

Concrete is fairly pourus, I think it would stain easily. And if you dropped something heavy enough on it, I would imagine it could crack.

Windykid Google concrete countertops You'll be suprised what you will find.
The concrete is sealed I think we used a Polyurithane.

Re: Concrete Sinks

I saw a bar countertop made from concrete in a new pub that was being built. They made a form on top of the pedestals that were to support it, and the concrete was poured in-place. They used smaller gravel, maybe 1/2 screen size. I didn't see if they did this, but I am sure they used some sort of vibrator to work out all the air pockets from the cement. After the concrete cured for a week or so, they surface ground it and polished it to something like a satin finish. I'm sure a similar thing could be done to make a vanity and sink, although a mold of some sort would have to be made to accomodate the appropriate size drain hardware, faucets, etc.

Sorry about the off-topic posts when you were looking for some serious info, but I couldn't resist; it was just too enticing a set-up of words!!
