condenser fan motor

I'm tellin ya,i'm just having a wonderful time, well yesterday was the tailgate, today the condender fan motor went out on the ac unit,i called the repair company and they said that they'll have to order the fan motor and it's gonna cost $655.00, now in my opinion that seems kinda high for a fan motor, maybe some of you ac dudes out there can tell me, am i about to be suckered here?

If this is central air, it sounds like the price for a complete condenser assembly. I would check around at the local electric motor rewind shops for just a fan motor replacement, or even a repair/exchange.

I checked a few places on the web and the average price for a 1/4 hp, 825 rpm fan motor was between $110.00 and $120.00, the amount of time to take out the old and install the new is less than 20 mins,some of these ac services do take price gouging to extremities .

Check out Granger. They had my motor for 31 dollars whereas the ac shop wanted $119.

Thanks KB i will do that i have found a few places that have the motor in stock but they would'nt sell it to me because i do not have a state permit to buy at wholesale,they only sell to dealers,and the ones that i've so far encountered will only supply me if they can do the installation themselves for a tidy ransom

That is a high price if you ask me. Especially for a quarter horse motor. Does your motor spin free? or is is siezed up? It could be as simple as a capacitor if it isn't siezed. <br /><br />Some places do in fact take advantage of people for their lack of knowledge of equipment. A $100 motor with $500 of labor just doesn't sound right. IMO......

Well i got me a motor from Granger like KB advised, paid $98.00 dollars for it,the capacitor was an extra $12.99, out with the old in with the new,pressures were all within manufacturer recomended range and it only took me about 45 minutes to do. Air is now blowing nice and cold and $550.00 stayed in my pocket and did'nt go to those extortionist scumbags.<br />Thanks for all the great advice fellas.<br />

Yep! it's just wonderful that there are so many knowledgeable folks on iboats who are willing to help each other with lots of good information
