Greetings fellow boaters. I hope your boating season is going well. I need some help as I can't find my answer. I have attached two pictures of my 1990 Sunbird 194. The red gelcoat that's above and below the rub rail was extremely faded. I tried compound, wax, wet sand up to 2000 grit and I couldn't get rid of the oxidation so I completely dewaxed and applied rustoleum red marine paint (from Lowes) directly over the sanded gelcoat. I guess in hind sight I should've reapplied fresh/new red gelcoat but it is what it is. My plan was then to apply clear gelcoat. I've read a bunch of different forums and articles and of course there are different answers regarding how to apply the new gelcoat over where I just painted. The most common method I have read, in a nut shell is to spray 3 different coats. The first 2 coats with unwaxed and the 3rd spray with waxed and then sand to a shine. I'm thinking about going this route. I'm currently shopping for gelcoat and I've been finding some brands that are not even labeled whether or not it has wax in it and I recently found a brand that has the wax additive separate so it can be added as needed and I was like score this is what I need then it read to not apply directly over paint and it burst my bubble. Here is an example: http://www.bottompaintstore.com/gelcoat-clear-hiuv-p-10333.html

I'm entirely confused and in need of your wisdom, guidance and advice of what type/brand of clear gelcoat I need to finish my project and how to correctly apply. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

you dont clear rustoleum, you can buff it though.

gelcoat doesnt do well over paint, you have to get down to either gel or raw fiberglass

yes, red er pink sucks

Im hitting my boat with Imron this winter as I am also changing the graphics a bit.

Yep, no clear gelcoat over paint

Clearcoat maybe, but that will make touch ups later even more difficult.

Tis True ^^^ No Gelcoat over paint. If you want a High Gloss Rustoleum finish that's durable then use the Acrylic Hardener in the Paint. It'll Shine like the sun and be hard as nails. After a couple of weeks you can wax an buff it to a High Lustre!!!
