The black one at the picture is the original one with the centrifugal slinger going over the top of the housing (pre-alpha outdrive MCM228 1978).The white one is what the Sierra dealer sent me.Between the insert and the top of the housing there is a gap where the centrifugal slinger seems to fit fine but i 'm not sure. Why not over the top of the housig again? Is there some other seal for that gap?

Install this one just as the old came off. It's the same, only a little restyling.

You mean the gap between of the insert and the top of the housing will remain empty and the centrifugal slinger over the top of the imp.housing? And what is this gap for?cooling reasons?

No idea why the gap is there. Looks to me like they just cut back on plastic by changing the design a little. All the mating surfaces are the same height as the original. Put the new one on and go boating.

Sierra sent me an email and confirms what jam1 said. The gap stays empty and the slinger goes over the top of the housing.
