By the way you describe it, you have a compression problem. I would check the compression with a tester and see what numbers you get. If the cylinder is in fact really low, then you are going to have to pull the head and check it out, maybe you will get luckey and have a defective head gasket.

You can buy a compression tester at any automotive store. Although, what you are describing sounds like a fuel problem to me, if the sparks are wet there is a good chance that the cylinder is not firing and getting flooded with fuel. I had a similar problem with my cylinder #3 not firing and that spark was always wet, it was a carb problem that I resolved.

The best thing to do before spending any money is to perform a proper compression check. At least then you will know where you stand. Good luck.

I did a compression test and got the bad news i was dreading.
Top cyl.-25psi.
Bottom cyl.- 125psi.

I guess its time to pull the cyl head and see what's goin on. anything i should know about pulling the head on one of these?

Do not use a breaker bar etc if you have trouble getting the bolts loose. If you have any trouble with any/all bolts use some PB Blaster and/or some heat to get 'em loose.
I was fortunate with my head bolts....they came off with ease.

Good luck, with some hope maybe it will be an easy fix!

Re:  Bad carb?

pulled the head and the top of the piston looks like someone took a meat tenderizer to it for about a week straight. but strange enough the cylinder wall is still smooth with maybe 1 tiny scratch. The backside of the head (area around where the spark plug goes) looks like the the top of that bad piston.

Do you guys think its worth rebuilding or have i got myself a new anchor?

Re:  Bad carb?

Can someone give me what you think a rough estimate would be if i did the teardown and rebuild myself? I can get the bore job at discount price, and i found a used cyl head for $75.

Another question. The original owner of this motor had it rebuilt and bored already, would it be possible to bore it out another .020?

If the motor was already rebuilt once then either the PO beat the crap out of it after the rebuild.....or...there's an underlying problem that hasn't been fixed.

Probably cheaper/less hassle to find another powerhead or just buy another motor.
