Connecting a tachometer to a 7.5 hp Mercury Outboard

Can anyone explain how to connect a tachometer to a Mercury 7.5 hp outboard motor?
What type of tachometer will I need, it is to set the timming and maximum throttle set screw as per the manual instructions. Unfortunently, there are no instructions for this. Thanks in advance for any help...Ray
