Consequences of Overheating

I posted earlier about an engine overheat- I've read several similar posts on the issue that got me thinking-

The fact is my boat engine overheated- started smoking and shut it down- I let it cool over night and started it the next morning, at which point it over heated again- since I was watching for it it did not appear to get as hot before shut down, but never the less it over heated again.

This is new territory for me. I've owned two outboards but never experienced any problems like this (though had my share of others). What are the major consequences of overheating besides cracked heads? What should I be looking for as signs of greater damage?

The boat is at a marina not accessible to me during the week so I am having a guy look at it this week to give me a prognosis- frankly, I'm kinda nervous about what I may find out....

What motor do you have? When was your last impeller change? If you are really lucky, nothing. If you are lucky, a pair of head gaskets. Not so lucky, a pair of heads and manifolds. Sh!t outta luck...a motor. Look for water in the oil (if you are even pumping) and you need to check the compression and watch the oil pressure if you came out lucky..

From your other post, you stated:
Ran for 10 minutes and held at about 160- then out of nowhere it overheats- shot right up to 200- 220.
At 200 to 220 degrees, you didn't do any damage to the engine itself. The smoke is probably from the exhaust hoses burning for lack of water and/or what little water is getting to it is turning to steam.

Disregard my previous post. I was not aware you gave specifics. Sorry. What Don said.

The color and location of the smoke can tell you alot. Hopefully it looked white and was actually water flashing off into steam with any luck.
