considering bigger engine

I have a 16 foot lowe modifed v tiller with a 25 hp evinrude, this boat is rated for a 35, i would like a little more speed from it and since a 35 hp short shaft is so hard to find I'm considering buying a 30 horse. I was wondering whether or not the five horsepower difference will add any speed or if I should just wait it out and see if I can find a 35 short shaft.

It will add more get-up-and-go type power, but no real distance speed. If I were you, I would wait for the 35HP. It's no fun with a smaller motor on their.

the 25hp you are talking about is 2-cyl right? If you get a 30hp yamaha and prop it right, you will get much more power and speed out of it by far ....

before going and spending money on an additional 5 hp, check your set up. be sure you are at the optimum, engine height, and trim angle. it may surprize you. you didn't say what year and model 25 rude you have. i had a 1955 15 hp on a 14 ft alum. put up speed, and hole shot, by just raising the motor 3/4 of an inch.

its a 1992 two cylinder two stroke and i have it trimmed all the way up most of the time, thanks

if you bought a new 30 HP yamha(considering its a 4 stroke)you will lose speed 4 strokes are know for saving gas being quiet and running smooth they are NOT known for speed there just to heavy.yamaha clamed that in 2008 it will be coming out with a 4 stroke nearly as fast as a 2 stroke but we will have to wait and see.if your looking for speed you need to stick with 2 stroke for now anyway

not trimmed up, raised up. put a piece of 1x2 between the transom and the transom mount, then another one. as long as you have good water flow and it doesn't cavitate. (suck air into the prop)

Thanks Tashasdaddy for the idea, but I'm wondering if there is a way that i can judge how much higher i should raise my motor, or how to tell if i need to raise it or not?

As a rule-of-thumb place to start, you should have the A/V plate even with, or slightly higher than the keel of your boat.​

Short shaft 35 hp tiller motors are not hard to find. There is one in my garage.

The time to reseal the lower unit, and the time to use the boat/motor, is hard to find.
