Just had a lower unit go on my 1989 evinrude 175 motor, and am considering repowering. I have a 1984 22' Grady White walkaround that is labeled as 230hp Max. I have 3 questions that I hope someone can help answer:
1) What else is involved in repowering other than the new motor? (i.e. new controls, etc.)

2) I heard that 4 strokes are heavier that 2 strokes. Is a 4 stroke 175 motor (like Honda, Suzuki) too heavy for my boat?

3) Would anyone recommend factory rebuilt motors, or shoud I go for it with brand new?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Considering Repowering

Howdy, KJR Barnes.

Yes, most 4 strokes are heavier than equivalent carbed 2 strokes. Closer to DFI 2 strokes.

There is currently no 4 stroke in 175Hp available, though a 175 Honda is runored.

4 strokes suitable for your boat would be the DF140 Suzuki or Johnson or the Yamaha or Honda 200 and 225.

There are several good DFI 2 strokes available in your power range.

For a 22' Grady White, I think I would go for the Honda V6, 200 or 225.

On the other hand, a Johnson Carbed 175 or Evinrude DFI 175 would use most, if not all of your current controls and instrumentation.

Be sure to check out iboats' inventory of warrantied, late model and new engines. Click on Boat Motors at the top of the page.

Good luck, and let us know what you go with. :)

KJ,

The Grady is a heavy boat by anyones terms.

Althought the John/Rude/Suzuki 140 is truly a great engine, I believe it may be little light for your hull.

I would stay with 175 plus. The Yam and Honda 200/225's are very nice engines but the price tags are equally as nice-read high.

If fuel economy is not a big issue, go with a carbed engine of that hp. range. They are reliable, easy to maintain and relatively a bargain.
