Got my 1995 johnson Ocean Runner 115 hp rigged onto my boat this weekend.

I had a 1997 evinrude Ocean Pro 90 HP just before this, so all my guages are the same...both used the system check tach.

with the 115 after running a few minutes the alarm( continuous) goes off and the HOT light comes on....after about 10 seconds or so, it goes off on its own. But the red light stays on that says HOT.

I have a temp guage with a switch for two senders, but this motor only has one sender( other than the two factory SENSORS)

the guage never went over 160!!!

the water is pumping hard...I have a pressure guage and the pressure never goes below 10 psi and goes all the way pasy 40 psi under way.
The tell tale is always strong.

I pulled the cover, and put my hand on both heads , they both felt the same....so i get the idea the head with no temp sender is the same temperature as the one with.

then I dont get the alram any more, but the red light stays on.

until i shut it off...

and then after a few minutes, the alarm goes off again....then goes off after its 10-15 seonds.

If I could find a Temp sender( very hard to do for this motor) id install it on the other head.

The guy warrantied the motor, so i dont want to pull thermostats and just replace for peace of mind..

the VRO is not used and there are a few wires un connected...a tan and a black and a plug with 4 wires

is it safe to continue running?

i never got the red light staying on on the 90 hp!!! and never got an alarm at all
thanks

Re: constant alarm for 10 seconds...

You have an overheat warning coming from one of your two cylinder banks, so you need to assume that the the engine is overheating. Check the thermostats and the seats.

Re: constant alarm for 10 seconds...

because the red light and the alarm dont jive all the time...I was THINKING it is a missed or broken circuit issue. maybe I was HOPING!!

the alarm goes off and the SLOW system does not kick in....though!!!

is the over heat alarm designed to stay on as long as the overheat condition exists???

I can put on palm on both heads....

what temperature is DANGEROUS for the motor?

180
200
212?

if I could only find another temp sender for this Ocean runner!!!

Look at the guage manufacturers website for extra sensors.

Tan/black wire could be tilt guage wire.

thanks for the reply... the tan and black wires are a pair and ONE is all black and ONE is all tan..

I saw the same thing on my 90 hp but they terminated in a rectangle connector!! and my VRO wasnt being used on that motor either...thus my thought on what it MIGHT be.

I went and put the temp sender into the other head and it only ran up to about 140, then fell to about 130 and stayed there for an hour of boating today. That head runs much cooler than the other side.

i stopped and took the temp sender off again and reinstalled in the first head it originally was in and that heads temps went to about 160 mostly it spiked at one point to about 170...... soooooo

one head runs at 130 ish and the other is running at 160+

whats the problem???

I checked out the alarm as well....it comes on every time I start the motor about 2 minutes after the motor starts.. last 10 seconds and goes off.

never comes on again until i shut the motor off and restart....then 2 minutes later the alarm comes on!!!! last 10 seconds and goes off...

even when the temp guage read less than 120 degrees!!

I am less worried about the alarm now, but concerned about how to correct the higher temp in the one head

thanks
